Background of the Study

Shift work is a common practice in emergency healthcare settings due to the need for 24-hour care. However, it has been associated with various health challenges, including fatigue, stress, and disruptions in sleep patterns, which can affect nurses' productivity. This study aims to investigate the relationship between shift work and the productivity of emergency nurses at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital (ESUTH), with a focus on how different shifts (morning, evening, and night) impact their performance and well-being.

Statement of the Problem

Emergency nurses often work irregular hours, which can lead to physical and mental exhaustion, potentially reducing their productivity. Understanding the relationship between shift work and productivity is essential for improving the quality of care in emergency departments. This study seeks to determine how shift patterns influence emergency nurses’ ability to perform their duties efficiently.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effects of shift work on the productivity of emergency nurses at ESUTH.
  2. To determine how different shift patterns (morning, evening, and night) affect nurses' performance.
  3. To explore strategies for improving productivity and well-being among emergency nurses working shift schedules.

Research Questions

  1. What is the relationship between shift work and the productivity of emergency nurses at ESUTH?
  2. How do different shift patterns impact the performance of emergency nurses?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to enhance the productivity of emergency nurses working shift schedules?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Shift work does not significantly affect the productivity of emergency nurses at ESUTH.
  2. Different shift patterns do not significantly influence the performance of emergency nurses at ESUTH.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study will focus on emergency nurses working at Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital. Limitations include the potential difficulty in isolating the effects of shift work from other factors affecting productivity, such as workload and work environment.

Definitions of Terms

  • Shift Work: A work schedule that requires employees to work outside the traditional 9-to-5 hours, including night and weekend shifts.
  • Productivity: The ability of nurses to perform their duties effectively, efficiently, and with high-quality care in the emergency department.
